About Uaxactun

Uaxactun (eight stones) is located at 25 kilometers north of Tikal. It was a important pre-classic city that flourished from 500 AD to 900 AD. According to a found inscription, Uaxactun existed longer that any other Mayan city, possibly from as early as 900 BC.

The most impressive structure in Uaxactun is a truncated pyramid with stairways on four sides that are flanked by huge masks that are covered with stucco. This pyramid was used for astronomical studies. The equinox and solstice were accurately determined by sighting the sunrise.
